Joseph Grant, Grocer: Ghost Sign

Waymark Code: WMNCWE
Online MIKAN no. 3192910 (1 item), Library and Archives Canada
I am finally back waymarking now that grandson has been in his true home for weeks. Without daily trips to hospital and doctors, with full time work again, my play time has been restricted. The month of January was busiest month yet for waymark visits. This was in part due to visiting many in the Blogger category and many of the oldest waymarks. I hope I learned some trick from those blogs for this blog. My recent waymark posts have been from commercial categories. Many waymarkers are not fans of commercial categories but I can enjoy them.Walking to toward the Byward Market in -35 windchill, I noticed a ghost sign for the first time. For decades, Joseph Grant ran a grocers wholesaler on York Street in the Byward Market. Mr Grant retired in 1934. He died in 1957.When the sign was painted on the west wall of the building at 17 York Street, the building next door was only two storeys tall. The surviving sign advertising Joseph Grant Wholesale and Clover Leaf Tea was painted before 1911. See the photograph from Library and Archives Canada. The sign can best be seen from atop the York Street stairs but most of the sign's words are blocked by nearer buildings. Hopefully, taking photographs near the American embassy will not cause concerns.
