Greater Winnipeg Water District Railway box cars - "The Forks Marketplace"

I had a waymarking frenzy during a recent research trip to Winnipeg, visiting more than 100 waymarks, logging 75 in one day. There is still room for more waymarks in the area. I am posting three for static railway cars.

GWWD Box Cars - Winnipeg, Manitoba

The two rail cars are located in the parking lot immediately north of "The Forks Marketplace" near the caboose on display.

These two box cars began their railway careers in 1989 with the Greater Winnipeg Water District Railway as box cars #401 and #402

Since October 2014, the two rail cars have hosted a series of works by local artist Nym (Darryn J Nimchuk) entitled Crowds.

Joseph Grant, Grocer: Ghost Sign

Waymark Code: WMNCWE
Online MIKAN no. 3192910 (1 item), Library and Archives Canada
I am finally back waymarking now that grandson has been in his true home for weeks. Without daily trips to hospital and doctors, with full time work again, my play time has been restricted. The month of January was busiest month yet for waymark visits. This was in part due to visiting many in the Blogger category and many of the oldest waymarks. I hope I learned some trick from those blogs for this blog. My recent waymark posts have been from commercial categories. Many waymarkers are not fans of commercial categories but I can enjoy them.Walking to toward the Byward Market in -35 windchill, I noticed a ghost sign for the first time. For decades, Joseph Grant ran a grocers wholesaler on York Street in the Byward Market. Mr Grant retired in 1934. He died in 1957.When the sign was painted on the west wall of the building at 17 York Street, the building next door was only two storeys tall. The surviving sign advertising Joseph Grant Wholesale and Clover Leaf Tea was painted before 1911. See the photograph from Library and Archives Canada. The sign can best be seen from atop the York Street stairs but most of the sign's words are blocked by nearer buildings. Hopefully, taking photographs near the American embassy will not cause concerns.

Target - Place d'Orleans, Orleans, Ontario

Waymark Code: WMN7YK

Target Canada has announced all stores will close. It's time to waymark as many Target stores as possible. I enjoy creating commercial waymarks more than many waymarking enthusiasts. My third busiest waymarking category is Subway restaurants. However, I don't usually rush the creation of commercial ones with the exception of exotic locations.

Before 2013, this store in the Place d'Orleans shopping centre was operated by Zellers. Zellers went out of business and many of the Zellers stores across Canada were replaced by Target. Target was entering the Canadian market for the first time. When this shopping centre opened in 1983, there was a Woolco store here. Woolco stores were sold to Walmart Canada in 1994.

Ottawa Hospital - Civic Campus - Ottawa, ON

The Ottawa Hospital was created in 1998 as a merger between the Civic Hospital, the General Hospital and Riverside Hospital. Back in the 1920s, the Civic Hospital was also created as a merger of older hospitals. The Spanish flu epidemic in 1918 convinced municipal authorities that a more modern hospital was needed. The main building of the Civic Hospital opened to patients in 1924.

The mother and baby areas of the Civic Hospital have stories of their own. During the Second World War while the Dutch royal family found sanctuary in Ottawa, Princess Margriet was born at the Civic in a ward given temporary status as official Netherlands territory. In 1982, a fundraising performance by Frank Sinatra and Rich Little was fundamental to the creation of the Rich Little Special Care Nursery. Decades later, my grandson spent a few of his first weeks in that same special care nursery.
